Dos and Don'ts When Using the Internet to Search For Resumes

If you need to do some hiring for your business or for your client (if you are a job recruiter), you can get the best results by searching the internet for resumes. Finding resumes online is easier than going through a huge stack of resumes you got in response to a "now hiring" listing online. For that reason, you might want to get started right now. On that same note, there are some dos and don'ts you should keep in mind.

DO use a desktop resume finder. These programs will vary but they all have the same goal. That goal is to let you search the internet for resumes. When you use a desktop application, you are able to search thousands of websites at once. You are basically searching the internet but without needing to open an internet browser window. Moreover, many of these desktop programs come with other neat features such as remove resumes from your list, send replies right from the program, add customized notes, and more.

DON'T waste your time searching the internet manually. Lets say that you are looking for an office manager. You might key into Google or Yahoo "office manager resumes." You will get results from all around the world. Moreover, some of your results will be free resume templates or tips on how to create a resume for an office management position. It could take you 1 hour or more before you even get your hands on 5 good resumes.

DO realize that your time is being spent wisely. Typically, it sounds like a good idea to post a now hiring sign in your window or do a job listing online. You will get a lot of resumes and this is good, but what if most of those applicants are unqualified? You waste a lot of time and money reading their resumes. By using one of the above mentioned resume finders, you can cut down your search time. Even still, you eliminate hassle, time, and save money in the long run by searching for resumes instead of letting them come to you.

DON'T automatically bypass resumes that look like they haven't been updated in a while. Of course, you want to have some guide to follow. However, just because someone isn't actively searching for a job right now, it doesn't mean they won't take a better offer. If you find what you believe to be the perfect job candidate, send a reply. Even if that resume states they are employed now, make contact. You might be surprised how many people have their resumes posted online just incase something better comes along.
